Superwinch Reviews and Recommendations
Superwinch makes a wide array of winches from portable, to ATV, to heavy duty. If you’ve never used or purchased a winch before there can be a lot to learn when you first get started. This page is our take on making that process as easy as possible so that no matter which winch you buy, you’ll have the info to make the right purchase.
Winch power systems
Winches most commonly come in one of two power drive systems, electric and hydraulic. Electric winches wire up to your vehicles battery and get their power from your battery and hydraulic systems connect to your vehicle’s power steering system. Hydraulic winches are generally thought to last longer but require a much more complex install and are generally used on vehicles where the winch will see very frequent use on heavy vehicles.
Winch Line Pull Rating
The general rule of thumb is to have a pull rating of 1.5 times the weight of your vehicle. The rolling weight of your vehicle is much less than this but once its stuck in the mud that will rise quickly. Using a snatch block can double your pull weight by halving your line speed. More on this later.
This is the speed at which the winch will turn. If you need to pull a long distance the faster winches will save you time. Faster winch speeds also come into play when using a snatch block to double the pull by halving the line speed. If you are using your winch for recovery then the speed is unlikely to be a big concern.
Winch rolling fairlead vs hawse
Steel cable based winches use a rolling fairlead to protect the cable from damage going into and out of the winch and also to reduce lateral tension on the winch itself. A hawse is a solid block that doesn’t move and is used for synthetic cables that aren’t as damaged by friction.
Winch accessories, snatch block, winch blankets, and extension straps
The winch itself is fairly useless if you can’t hook it up to something solid, oriented in the right direction, and close enough to reach with your winch cable or extension straps. Check out this great walk-through by a helpful Aussie.
